Ancient Appian Way and Catacombs tour

If you are interested in less well-rounded itineraries, the tour of the Catacombs and the Appia Antica is the place for you!

We are in the heart of the suggestive Via Appia Antica, far from the chaos in the countryside. The Via Appia Antica is the most famous Roman road whose construction dates back to 312 BC, thanks to the censor Claudio Appio Cieco.

What we are going to do is a kind of time travel along the road that connected the Eternal City with Brindisi, that connected Greece to the Middle East. This route was a pilgrimage route during the Middle Ages, from here it was possible to get to the sea, cross it and reach the Holy Land.

Continuing our tour, we will visit the Roman catacombs belonging to the first Christian communities, such as the Catacombs of San Callisto and Santa Domitilla. They were made up of underground passages (ambulacra), out of whose walls graves (loculi) were dug. Walking through the galleries means admiring the pictorial decorations, the sumptuous reliefs of the sarcophagi, the architectures carved out of the tuff.
